The Chocolate Mess We Call Valentine's Day
There's another good reason to bypass chocolate or other candy as a gift
this year. The rate for obesity-triggered Type 2 diabetes is skyrocketing.
So just like they did on Halloween, the caring health professionals at the
Boston-based (and Harvard University-associated) Joslin Center for Diabetes
are offering tips for countering the unhealthy tradition of candy giving.
They advise: When most people think of Valentine's Day, they think
chocolate. But what should you give if your loved one is one of the
estimated 16 million people in the U.S. with diabetes?
While nutrition experts agree that people with diabetes can fit sweets into
their overall meal plan, they note that there are probably better gifts to
show a loved one you care.
"Given the fact that obesity is growing at an epidemic rate, many more
people are at increased risk for diabetes or heart disease because they are
overweight," notes Karen Chalmers, R.D., M.S., C.D.E., director of nutrition
services at Joslin.

Can You Be Fat and Fit?
Are You Overweight Or Over Fat?
Carrying excess weight takes a serious toll on anyone's body. The increased
risks of hypertension, diabetes and heart disease are the largest concern,
but the wear and tear on joints is also accelerated and can lead to the
development of degenerative joint disease and even permanent disability. But
does your weight alone put you at risk for these illnesses and problems?
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) relies on body mass index (BMI), a
height-weight calculation to determine whether you are more likely to face
diabetes, heart disease and other medical issues. If your BMI is 25 to 29,
you're overweight by government standards. You're considered obese if your
BMI is 30 or higher. A BMI of greater than 25 is considered a health risk.
